The cut in the rails is huge, the flange probably takes the wheels load when it is on the other track.
You can see the impact point on the LH, but rail on RH has a smaller impact point, probably due to load partially being taken by the flange.

Factual correction on the slides -

NDLS (IRCA Building) started in Feb 1986 - GT and TN were the first trains.

HWH on July 1, 1987.

CSTM on July 30, 1987 (Mahanagari and Lucknow Superfast, later renamed Pushpak were first trains).

MAS some time in early 1988.

SC - don't know.
