Classic! I recall having gone on this very route from Gariahat to Esplanade and back (in the 70s). This was one of the articulated trams that was found in abundance in the Ballygunje, Tollygunje, Gariahat areas. Some non-articulated ones could be seen at Howrah and nearby areas.

It is also sad that many tram routes have been stopped and only very few routes are still in operation.

I think it is a rope used to pull the Pantograph
and align with the overhead cable, should it come out
while negotiating points etc. Not sure if it had conducting
wire..

This is a single coach tram, that use to ply in the routes around Howrah. one of them have been refurbished and serves as a tourist Tram now a days. There are twin cabs on both sides, with passenger seating space in the middle.
