A YK class locomotive. The YK 2-6-0 engines were IRS class metre gauge locomotives built for light branch line and light passenger duties. Originally only the Assam Bengal Railway and the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway (MSMR) bought locomotives of this class that were built by Henschel & Skoda between 1928 and 1937. The YK locomotives of the Assam Bengal Railway were transferred to MSMR and the South Indian Railway where they finished their working life. After 1957, the remaining YK locomotives were renumbered 32005-28. Some locomotives of this class were fitted with Caprotti valve gear (as the one seen here) and others with rotary cam poppet valve gear. The date of this photograph is unknown, but is likely to be in the late 1940s or early 1950s, going by the apparent condition of the locomotive and the look of the rolling stock, while the locomotive appears to still sport the original old numbers that predate the standardized IR numbering and lettering style. Location unknown, although if it is in the 1940s it could perhaps be somewhere in the Deccan since the YKs by then were working on MSMR or SIR.
