Gang !

Bad news, the Vishakhapatnam - Hyderabad Godavari Express had
a serious derailment at Kazipet on 4th Jan at around 0300 Hrs.
The a/c classes were the worst affected with 9 deaths.
Apparently the loud bang from a fractured rail prompted the
driver to apply the emergency brakes, and that led to number
of coaches derailing. The line is totally blocked and some
traffic will start to trickle by 5th afternoon.

Subject: Longest Diesel Haul on the IR

Date: 05 Jun 1999 04:49:36 -0500

Gang !,

Which is the longest Diesel Hauled passenger train on the IR ?
Would that be Bangalore - Itarsi like KK Express ( SBC - GY -
GTL - SUR - DD - MMR - BSL - KNW - ET) or Bangalore - Itarsi
by the Bangalore Rajdhani ( SBC - GY - GTL - WD {just about !}
- SC - NGP - ET ?). Or is it some train on the SER like
Chennai - Howrah ?
Which will lead to the question - is it operated by the same
loco through ?
The Pune - Chennai (rather Renigunta) is not run with the same
diesel power, invariably the link of the power is such that it
gets changed at Guntakal or Gooty.
In the days before the Konkan Railways, we had a Pune WDM 2
which used to haul the 6335 Netravati to Cochin (0015 ex Pune
- CHTS 1130 next day then 1330 ex CHTS - 0130 Pune). I doubt
whether the loco was rested between 1130 and 1330 at Cochin.
Was this the longest run of a diesel hauled train on the IR ?
I had been to the Pune Jn. yesterday to see family off on the
1029 Azad Hind Express. The Pune WDM 2 in charge was having
trouble in getting the radiator fan started, so the assistant
put a wedge in one of the contactors and the fan began turning
after that. You could hear the big fan moaning once it
started.
I also spotted a Kazipeth WDM 2 with a really elaborate heat
exchanger for the compressed air near it's master reservoir.
It was like the 'feed water heaters' that adorn the American
and Canadian Steam locos. Normally the 'heat exchanger' in
the WDM 2 is the piping which has been bent around to increase
the amount of exposed area. Pune used to win the best
(cleanest ?) station on the IR shield in the past, I think now
it would easily win the converse of that.

Hi Folks,
The longest non-stop train in IR is 2431 Trivandrum-Nizamuddin Rajdhani
Express????. It runs non-stop from Vadodara to Nizamuddin(and
vice-versa) a
distance of 986 kms. for 12 hrs. as per WR timetable of Aug 98. I do
think
there will be a maintainence stop at Ratlam for loco change.
Does any other train in IR run non-stop for such along distance.???

Hi Apurva,
Im not sure what the longest diesel haul is in the country, but one that
I
am sure of seems longer then the two that you have mentioned......from
Itarsi to Guwahati!!! By a CR Itarsi WDM2 power on the Dadar-Guwahati
Express!! I have travelled by this train a few times all the way to GHY
so I
know this for sure.....
DC power to Igatpuri, AC power to Itarsi and then WDM2 to GHY!!
Does that qualify for a long diesel run on IR??
Regards,
Bharat

Yes maybe this is the longest, does the same loco work the train through

KK Express is hauled by two WDMs from SBC to BSL. From there either a
WAM4p
or WAP takes over. If an engine is not available at BSL, the train runs
to
ET and there an electric locomotive is attached. That is what I saw in
my
journeys from SBC to NDLS.

As far as HWH-MAS trains are concerned:

WAM4p locos from HWH to KGP
WDM locos from KGP to VSKP
WAM4p locos from VSKP to MAS

The distance for WDM run is not so big. Before the VSKP-BZA section was
electrified, the WDMs is VSKP used to change. The KGP-VSKP run was done
by
VSKP WDM locos and VSKP-BZA run was done by gaudy Gooty or KZP WDM
locos.

I thought that in SBC-NZM Rajdhani Express gets a change of power at SC
after the electrification? Any ideas?

Based on Saif's observation that Bhusawal is where the WDM 2 change for
electric
power, my guess is if the WDM 2s are from Guntakal/ Gooty/
Krishnarajpuram, then the
electric power would change at BSL. However if the WDM 2 pair is from
Itarsi (as it
was when I saw the train in July 1998), then it is only natural to
change the diesel
power at ET.

So that rules out the MAS - HWH run as the longest on the IR - which is
your candidate
for the longest run under diesel power ?

yes that must be correct, SC to NZM may be done by electric power. What
is the usual
power for the SBC Rajdhani - a WDM 2 pair from KJM ?

Most of the time the WDMs are from KJM. I have not seen one from Gooty
though. My impression is that there is no Diesel Loco Shed at GTL.

I think when I went last time the WDMs were from KJM and they changed at
ET.

My candidate for the longest diesel run would be SBC to ET by KK
express'
WDMs. The journey time is about 26 hours or so. If we say that the
average
speed is 40kmph then it would 1040kms on two WDMs from SBC to ET. The
SBC-NDLS journey is slightly more than 2000km.

Yes, that is correct.

In LLG (Lallguda) near Hyderabad/Secundrabad a new Electric Loco shed
has
appeared. I think this will cater the needs SCR trains. The WAP locos
from
LLG haul Godavari express from VSKP to HYD.

Adding the details, hopefully Apurva has no objection......

Ref. Times Of India, Mumbai edition dt:7th June '99

Intercity train to Madgaon from Today,

103 Dn train by KRC will leave CST at 5:20 AM daily & reach Madgaon at
4:20 PM. It will have halts at
Dadar,Thane,Panvel,Roha,Chiplun,Ratnagiri,
Kudal,Sawantwadi,Tivim & Karmail.

104 Up will leave Madgaon at 12:30 PM & reach CSTM at 11:15 PM.

The train will have 7-general chair car bogies, 2- AC chair car,2 brake

Currently they are operating holiday special , with same timings.
Earlier
Apurva ,too had mailed about it. One wonders if this in addition to the
holiday special ? or holiday special is transformed into permanent one
as
the Goa elections are over.

Though the dadar - GHY run is quiet a long WDM2 hauled run but there are

also quiet long runs by diesel by the E Rly and NF Railway trains.
The 3005/3006 Howrah Amritsar Mail is diesel hauled from Howrah to
Amritsar
which goes via patna lucknow and moradabad. The 3073/3074 Himgiri
Express is
hauled by WDM2 from Howrah to Jammu Tawwi by a loco of the Howrah diesel

SHED.Isnt this one impressive. The 5610/5609 Avadh Assam Express is also

hauled by a Gonda WDM2 from Guwahati to Delhi Junction via Katihar
Samstipur, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Moradabad. The new rajdahani to ghy
via
Lko and Moradabad is hauled bya TKD diesel from GHY to New DElhi.
Isnt that gives more playes in the diesel game. thanks Bharat for this
nice
question.

Subject: WDP6 commissioned ??

Date: 07 Jun 1999 01:20:19 -0500

Hi all,
Sometime back you might have come across a mail from Apurva
regarding
screening of some WAM4 action in a Tamil satellite channel(Sun TV) which
was
actually a journey if someone wins a contest. The contest was over and
the
prize winners were brought to Chennai from Kanyakumari by a train called
Sun
TV-3Roses Express( what a name !!). They had screened snippets of the
journey yesterday. The train was hauled by a ERODE WDM2A (17436) in its
traditional livery till Salem where an WAG5A took over. But this is not
what
i thought of telling you all. What was more stunning was that when they
showed this train pulling into Trichy Jn. there was this amazing beast
of a
WDP6 on the adjacent platform. It was predominantly white which some
dark
bands running on the sides. It was almost late in the evening when this
was
shot so the exact colour scheme was not very clear. The rake formation
was
that of a day train(chair-cars) and all coaches were new with the new
dark
blue-light blue livery, bright with the tube lights on insode. It was
just
for about 4-5 seconds they showed this loco and the coaches when they
were
showing the crowd in the station. It was a superb sight to see it atlast
in
action. I just want to know how many of these have been put into
service.
Anyone to get this info ???

Kind regards,
Anand

Absolutely right on target !!
Cannot thank you enough for sending this mail. I was channel surfing on
Saturday
when I accidentally saw the Sun TV show and was fascinated by the whole
report,
I stayed on till the very end hoping they would show some more shots of
the '3
roses express'. There were some great shots of the train.
Yes I saw the strange loco in the opposite platform at Trichy (only that
I did
not know that this was Trichy, not following Tamil). I though that this
was a
WAP 1 except for the rectangular window glass. It was in the back of my
mind and
and I paid no further attention to it. It is only with Anand's mail I
identify
this loco as the mighty WDP 1 (why do call it WDP 6?). It appears
larger than
the WDM 2 and much taller too. Certainly the loco appears heftier-
beefier. The
white/ cream livery was very attractive. Although the loco was dead and
silent,
it was the center of my attention, while the Sun TV loyalist danced on
the
platform in the foreground amidst the pouring rain.

Gang !

These are the details of the MAO intercity express inaugurated
on 7th June 1999 at 0430 Hrs.
0103 Dn: CSTM (0520 dep) - MAO (1620 arr)
0104 Up: MAO (1230 dep) - CSTM (arr 2315)

Stops in both directions: Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Chiplun,
Ratnagiri, Kudal, Sawantwadi, Tivim, Karmali
Rake formation: 7 II class chair car, 2 AC chair car, 2 brake
vans, 1 pantry car.

This is THE train to see the splendour of the Konkan Railway.
Although the timing is very similar to the holiday special
that was announced a few days back, this is a daily train.
Between the KR 0111/0112 (overnight express to Madgaon) and
this day train, the road transport would gets quite badly
decimated. Good !

In the recent accident, from the picture, the train looked Diesel hauled

there seemed to be no OHE visible in the pictures.

If the accident occurred at KZP then Godavari Express must have an
electric

I saw the twin-beam first and the WAP like look and i almost
jumped
out of my chair recognising it as WDP and not WAP. Moreover the sides
had
the usual ALCO looks unlike the WAP which has a row of slit-window like
appearance. Sad that a full shot of the loco was not taken. It would
have
been wonderful.

Kind regards,
Anand
