Treasures of the Assam Bengal Railway

A tribute from us to the fabled MG lines of Northeast Frontier Railway Zone, which were closed in October 2014 for gauge conversion. These pictures were captured during our trips in 2013 and 2014.

The construction of the hill section started originally in late 19th century and completed in 1903, as part of the line to link tea estates of Assam, with the Chittagong port. Historians say the British government employed workers from the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, Nepal, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar to complete this project. For every sleeper laid on this historical line, at least a worker had to give his life. Even today the graveyards by the MG trackside stand testimony to their sacrifice.

A truly outstanding album. Great efforts have gone into making this and each picture is worth its weight in gold - an era of MG which can never be replaced. Thanks for these gems!
