Bombay Port Trust

From the recently published Administration report of the BPT, it is satisfactory to learn that the traffic on the Port
Trust railway developed very considerably during the year under review, viz. 1917-18. The steady expansion of traffic is
illustrated by the growth of the revenue receipts during the first three years since the railway opened viz.

Year 1915-16	Railway Department Revenue	Rs. 9.97 lakhs
Year 1916-17	Railway Department Revenue	Rs. 14.94 lakhs
Year 1917-18	Railway Department Revenue	Rs. 19.67 lakhs

Journeys performed by local wagons were 74% more than in the previous year and over 30,000 wagons were shunted, re-booked
and diverted, 765 troop special trains were dealt with during the year and eight local passenger trains were run daily.

Expenditure on capital works during the year was kept as low as possible. The aggregate expenditure was Rs. 36.28 lakhs, of
which Rs. 32.67 was expended on the large works - Alexandra Docks, Mazagoan - Sewari reclamation and the Port Trust railway.i

The railway serves all the docks of the port of Bombay and also the Bunders on the east of the island north of Ballard pier,
as well as various depots allotted to certain trades. It is intended primarily for goods traffic, but also conveys troop
trains and postal and passenger trains run in connection with the mail steamers.

It consists of a double track its whole length as well as reception and sorting yards, eleven stations and a large number
of private sidings and numerous sidings in the dock.

Sanction for construction of the line by the Bombay Port Trust was conveyed in the railway Boards notice No 152, 28/5/1913.

2-6-0T locomotives classified as A class, 2-10-2T's classified as H classiii Twenty three steam and twenty diesels working,
1966(?)iv Of the twenty-three steam, twenty one are VF's & NW 2-6-0T's and two are NW 2-10-2T used for hump shuntingv Steam
locos down to fifteen in number. No 14 & 29 wdn after collision damage. Steam locos are longer used in the dock area but
shunt and trip between the various yards outside. vi Eighteen 2-6-0T's in use, No 13 & 32 condemned. 10 locos are required. vii

Six duties for steam remain. Nos. 13, 15, 17, 19, 31 & 32 all wdn and dumped at Wadala Shed. viii By 3/1976, there were
fourteen steam locomotives left, of which eight were working. Both 2-10-2T's were cut up in 2/1976 along with a few of the
2-6-0T's. There were about eight diesels.ix In 1978(?), there were 18 class A tanks, fifteen of which were working. There
were twenty diesels of three types. Sixteen of these diesels were either under repair or in the shed just not in use. The
steam locomotives are preferred because the diesel locomotives are under-powered.x In 01/1984 four 2-6-0Ts were in use and t
wo were under repair. Nos 20, 24, 27 and 30 were dumped in the shed. 14/01/1985 Nos 22, 23 and 28 in steam, no 21 dead.
There were no dumped steam xiiSteam operations ceased in 1988 all remaining locomotives were cut up on site. The old steam
depot has been demolished and a Port Trust housing colony built over it.xii

Braithwaite & Co, Tansa pipeline contract, Bombay
Gauge: 2'6"

The letting of the contract to Ms Braithwaite and Co for the laying of the Tansa pipeline from the Tansa lake to Bombay has
involved a number of subsidiary orders. Among these is the provision of special locomotives and rolling stock for the pipes,
which vary from 57 to 72 inches in diameter and from 43 to 60 feet in length. Each pipe weighs approximately 8 tons, the
maximum load being 13 pipes while the normal load is 8.

The plant which has been supplied by JF consists of 7 locomotives and 232 special pipe bogies. (There then follows a
technical description of the locos and wagons and plates of JF 15450 and a view of a pipe bogie).xiii

The Tansa system is described in The Locomotive ,15/5/1924.

Later all sent to Kalamb Sugar factory xiv

Municipal Corporation of Bombay Waterworks Department

In 1910, the Municipal Commissioner for Bombay, presented Bombay Corporation a scheme estimated to cost over 7 lakhs for
improving sewerage disposal by using a submarine channel to wash the sewerage out. xxii It is assumed that this scheme was
Lovegrove outfall sewer.

Main workshops are at Ghatkopar, which contained two RH's and two locomotives built at Ghatkopar and eleven motor trolleys.xxiii

In 8/1983, Centreline of Bamber Bridge, Preston carried out a refurbishment on a 60kms long water supply pipe for Bombay
(assumed to be the Tansa pipeline). The railway was already there, suggesting that it was the line used by Braithwaites for
the building of the pipeline. Four locomotives were purchased from Track Supplies, Wolverton and exported to India. When
Centriline finished the contract, the locomotives were left in India but still owned by Centriline.

Centriline built a locomotive at Ghatkopar but was not considered a success xxiv
